The goal of the laser treatment is to stabilize the retina and keep it from deteriorating. In some cases, the laser can benefit the retina and improve vision, especially when it prevents blood vessel leakage. Retinopathy can worsen if left untreated, causing irreversible damage to your eye and vision. The laser procedure is performed in the examination room with the slit lamp microscope you previously used. Your pupil will be dilated so that you can see the retina. To numb the surface of your eye, an eye drop will be used. A special type of contact lens will be placed on the surface of your eye. This is not painful, and you will not even notice it. The contact lens prevents your eyelids from blinking, obstructing your vision, and allows us to see and focus on the back of your eye. Once the target tissue is visible, the laser will be activated. This will take the form of bright flashes of light. The laser treatment is usually painless, but you may experience a pinprick now and then. If this occurs, we will attempt to alter the laser settings. You must keep your head and eyes still during the laser treatment.
